Biographical Information
Dr. Darla Shaw has been the educational literacy specialist for the past 20 years for the Education and Educational Psychology Dept.
She regularly teaches both undergraduates and graduates in literacy based courses needed to perform in today’s classrooms and take the required tests. Coming to WCSU after 36 years as the Language Arts Coordinator for the Ridgefield, Ct. School System, Dr. Shaw believes in having the students out in the schools as much as possible and working in real world situations. During her time at WCSU she has developed the Education Club, the Future Teacher’s Club, the Read Across American Program, the Banned Books Program, the Spooky Reading Night Program, the Danbury Mentor of the Year Program, the Danbury History Comes Alive Program, The Drum Circles for Autistic Children Program, the Oral History Program with the Senior Citizen in Danbury, The Educational Honor Society Program and many other programs. In addition to her work at WCSU, Dr. Shaw is a well- known area storyteller, presenter at literacy conferences, musician, advocate for women’s issues, and humanitarian. She has spoken on literacy topics in over 80 countries and has initiated literacy projects in thirteen, third world countries.
