Wintersession in Florence, Italy – December 28th, 2019 – January 19th, 2020

Italian Language and Culture – IT 198

Students will earn 3 credits that fulfill the general education language requirement if taken in conjunction with IT 162 prior to the Intersession in Italy, or if they take IT 164 after the Intersession.

Please contact the faculty leader, Professor Patrizia Farina (farinap@wcsu.edu) for additional information.

The program will begin with one week of classes at WCSU in Danbury before leaving on a three week trip to Italy. Classes in Florence, the capital of Tuscany region, will be conducted at the Florence University of the Arts, a modern, state of the art facility in the historic center. Florence is the cradle of Italian Renaissance where such giants as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Donatello lived and worked. It was here that Dante penned the great work of Italian literature, the Divine Comedy . The city offers a plethora of historical and artistic landmarks, such as the Medici Palace, the Ponte Vecchio , the Galleria degli Uffizi and Michelangelo’s David, making it an ideal location to explore Italian language and culture. In addition to language classes, the program offers immersion in Italian culture through multiple visits and field trips to places of interest and surrounding medieval towns. A hands-on Italian cooking class, our students’ favorite, is one of the staples of the program. It is included at no additional cost. Students will be housed in apartments within walking distance of the school.

Information Flyer

We stay and study at Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Art and Culture in a village in the area of Dharmsala, India. The area is the seat of the Tibetan government in exile and home to a large refugee community around the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan scholars and teachers in exile from their homeland. It is in the foothills of the Himalayas, with views of their snowy peaks. This is an extraordinary opportunity to experience and participate in a unique environment and culture.

Course Description

In the context of our setting in the Tibetan exile community in India, students examine Tibetan Buddhism’s Indian roots and distinctive cultural features. Visits to local institutions and people engage us with Tibetans’ activism and struggles for cultural survival. In coordination with morning studio art classes, we explore Buddhist symbolism and contemplative culture in Tibetan artistic practices. In readings, class discussions and individual reflections, we examine Tibetan Buddhism’s practical application to perennial and personal questions of identity, moral choice and human purpose, as well as to current ethical, social and psychological issues such as the environment and mental health. We investigate psychological and neurologic studies of Tibetan meditation practices, and non-Buddhist applications of these practices.

Accommodation: Norbulingka Guest House at Norbulingka Institute of Tibetan Art & Culture.  Click here for more information about Norbulingka.
