Set up an advisement appointment least two weeks prior to your Registration Priority Date
It is important to learn how your advisor makes appointments for advisement. You may need to set up an appointment online, in person, or the department may offer walk-in advisement hours. Because the process varies, it is important for you to seek out your advisor and set up an appointment prior to your registration priority date. You also want to have enough time after advisement to work out your schedule and make course selections prior to your registration date. If your advisor’s office hours book up, you may be left with an appointment after your priority date, try hard to avoid this situation and make your appointment early!

If you have holds on your account, you should still set up an advisement appointment and get your registration PIN from your advisor. This way you are prepared to register once the holds are resolved and cleared from your account.

Look at your degree requirements in DegreeWorks by signing into BannerWeb
You can view your Degree Progress, requirements, and even process “What If” reports if you’re interested in changing your major. This tool helps prepare you for your advisement appointment because it tells you exactly what course you need to take for graduation.

Meet with your advisor!

When you meet with your advisor, you should bring a plan or at least preliminary guide of what your goals are for the upcoming semester.
Be sure to write down your PIN, but it will change every semester!
Use the Discussion Points to help guide you through your meeting.

Discussion Points for Advisement

When you meet with your advisor, you should have a plan or at lease preliminary guide of what your goals are for the upcoming semester. Use your 4-year Plan as a guide to course selection.

  • Have I met the requirements for the competencies associated with my major?
  • Do I have to take any placement tests in order to fulfill my Math or Writing requirements?
  • Share your goals for this major with your faculty advisor, discuss how you can meet those goals.
  • Are there opportunities for me to do research alongside faculty in this major or department? Any internships or study abroad opportunities?
  • Am I meeting minimum GPA or grade requirements to be in good standing in this major?
  • When can I expect to complete my courses and be eligible for graduation?

Why do I need an advisor?

Academic advisors are able to assist when you have questions about academic policies and procedures; or when you need help locating other helpful resources on campus. Students should meet with their academic advisor to ensure they are taking courses that fulfill their major and university requirements towards graduation.

Can I “pick up my PIN” from the Advisement Center?

Sorry – we can’t simply hand out PIN’s prior to consultation. Although, you are responsible for your academic progress, it is the advisor’s obligation to help you stay on the right track. If you know what you’d like to take, bring those courses with you, if everything checks out, you could be out of your meeting in less than 15 minutes!

Why am I getting an error message when I try to register?

Error messages are common when courses are offered at the same time of day or even if they start and end at the same time. If you experience an error, try these steps:

  • Do course times overlap or start and end at the same time? Use the course scheduling grid to avoid this error message
  • Do you meet the prerequisite for the course you’re trying to register for? You can check this by clicking on the course CRN and then on “View Catalog Entry”
  • Have you already taken this particular course? If you are repeating a course, you need to have the permission into the Registrar’s Office before you attempt to register for that course.
  • If everything checks out, then stop by the Registrar’s Office, Old Main 102 to learn how you can fix the error and continue registering for classes

What is Add/Drop?

The Add/Drop period is always the first five days of the semester. After the first week you will need to withdraw from the class. Add/Drop will not appear on your transcript, this is why it is important for you to attend the first week of class to make sure you are happy with your courses and your schedule. After the first week, you’ll need to fill out a withdraw form and you’ll receive a “W” on your transcript for that course. There are other implications for withdrawing from a course you should discuss with your advisor before you formally withdraw.
