Oswaldo Guerra is a sophomore at Western majoring in Elementary Education. Oswaldo recently joined the Education Department. He was able to make the Dean’s List for the fall semester of 2016.

So far, throughout his time at Western, Oswaldo has been an active member of the community. Oswaldo has volunteered at his local church as a counselor and sub;director of the Adventurer Club, a club for children between the age of 5 and 10. He has also taken the role as a teacher for his church’s Sabbath School (similar to a sunday school) for children between the ages of 10 and 13. Although he spends a lot of his time working or studying, he tries to to find some time to volunteer at a local elementary school. He has had the opportunity to volunteer at Pembroke Elementary School helping out teacher of the year 2016, Mrs. Nancy Michael. He has been able to observe a successful educator and is truly grateful for the opportunity.

Oswaldo says that teaching has always been a profession that has caught his eye. “Ever since I was little I would pretend I was a teacher while my brother was my student. At age 12 I was making up worksheets and correcting them by drawing big stars and smiley faces all over the paper. Many of my favorite memories have been from my elementary school teachers and their various styles of teaching. Educating a child and guiding them into becoming a productive member of society is something beyond compare and I look forward to doing so. I genuinely enjoy interacting with children and knowing that I am going something that matters is all I ever wanted to do.”
Oswaldo plans to continue to volunteer at local elementary schools and at his church. “I am excited in continuing this path into such a wonderful profession.”
