Summer STEAM: The Early College Summer Program at WCSU

Summer STEAM

Summer STEAM is a two week program for students going into their junior or senior year in high school. STEAM provides an introduction to the college experience and the opportunity to take a college course for credit. In Summer STEAM, you can explore the benefits of university life and take charge of your future.

For Summer 2016, Summer STEAM will be held Monday through Friday, August 1st to August 12th.

Students will take History 100: Introduction to History.  This course will offer an interdisciplinary exploration of contemporary problems in American society.  The Summer 2016 STEAM course will look in depth at poverty, racism and immigration.  You will gain from hands-on research experience within the local Danbury community as we explore issues of population change, racial conflict, and the growing national significance of income inequality.

In addition to the course, students will choose a STEAM Team in Biology and Scientific Methods, Video Production, or Sociology and Social Analysis to consider social questions through a disciplinary lens.  Each STEAM Team will work with a WCSU Professor to examine how science, arts, visual communication or social investigation sheds new light on the complex questions we face today.

Our Biology and Scientific Methods STEAM Team will explore biology techniques to build hypotheses through inductive and deductive processes.  We will also use outdoor laboratory settings to focus on natural history and discovery through observation.

The STEAM Team in Video Production will consider the creative and technical aspects of video production. They will focus on the process and techniques of video production through discussion, screenings, and hands-on experience.

Our Sociology and Social Analysis STEAM Team will examine how sociologists and other social scientists identify and evaluate social problems.

Students take one course during STEAM’s two weeks and earn three college credits.  This allows you to demonstrate your abilities when applying for admission, and the credits can usually be applied at your undergraduate college or university.

What will I do in the STEAM Program?

Summer STEAM is designed to be both an exciting and a useful introduction to college. We begin each day with all students meeting together to share ideas we’ve learned and to consider how those ideas may be applied at home, school, or in our communities. Classes meet individually in the morning. After lunch, a scheduled study period also allows everyone access to Haas Library and its Computer Cafe facilities so that you can keep up with your coursework. Our afternoons will feature a variety of programs which allow you to explore college life. We’ll talk about how to choose the right college for you, how to understand paying for college and financial aid, how to handle college stress and social life, and the skills necessary for a successful college career.

How much does it cost?

For summer 2016, Summer STEAM will cost $1,011.80. This includes participation in a 3 credit college course, lunch and snacks, and university fees.

Some financial aid may be available. For further information, please contact us at the Summer STEAM program.
