MISSION

Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) promotes organizational and individual wellness and respect among members of its campus community by fostering a wellness culture across the university's campuses and by building partnerships with the greater community.

OBJECTIVES

The university will accomplish this mission through a cohesive and comprehensive partnership between WCSU's Academic Community and Student Affairs staff emphasizing

  1. the effective delivery of educational programs and services that promote optimum wellness, balance, and a healthy life style;

  2. the provision of campus-wide wellness and fitness activities sensitive to race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, and individual capabilities;

  3. the empowerment of students, faculty, and staff who aspire to promote a healthy and safe campus environment;

  4. the responsibility to identify, prioritize, and manage one's own health needs;

  5. the understanding of how wellness and developmental and environmental issues interact to affect individuals and their communities throughout their life span;

  6. the empowerment of individuals to develop the self-care skills and tools necessary to search, analyze, and promote positive decision-making, to enhance personal and societal well-being, and to encourage persons to accept the challenge to become all that they are capable of being;

  7. accessible safe and respectful environments both within and outside the classroom that support a learning community, and establish feelings of connectedness;

  8. The increased understanding that the classroom is a safe environment for exchange of controversial ideas, and learning the relative strengths and weaknesses of alternative methods to arrive at their own judgments;

  9. faculty and staff communicating and teaching human, institutional, academic and diverse cultural values and aspirations, moral reasoning, ethical behavior, integrity, personal responsibility, and trust;

  10. the provision of academic curricula, campus internships, and work sites for students interested in pursuing Social Work, Community and Health Education, Nursing, Holistic Health, Wellness Management, School and Community Counseling, Health Administration, Psychology, Medical Technology, Interdisciplinary Gerontological Studies, and other academic initiatives;

  11. students, faculty, and staff becoming full participants in their own life-long health, which contributes toward their achieving educational and occupational success and becoming contributing members and leaders of society.
