What is accessibility?

Accessibility is the process of making it easier for everyone to participate in all the programs, courses, and activities that WCSU has to offer.

 

What is accessible technology?

Accessible electronic and information technology is technology that can be used by a wide range of individuals which allows users to be able to interact with technology in ways that work best for them. By developing course content with accessibility in mind, instructors can incorporate the principles of universal design, and develop content that is usable by people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.

 

Why is accessible technology important?

WCSU is using the Internet and web technologies for service delivery, course delivery, and information dissemination. Due to core services and information being delivered via the Web, it is important that all people are able to access the information.

 

What are the benefits for making information technology accessible?

Beyond compliance with legal mandates, the use of accessible design is beneficial to all students. As with many enhancements intended for individuals with disabilities, such as automatic doors, elevators and ramps, accessible technology can benefit all users.Accessible information technology and course design are useful as it helps improve the ability to teach and address the needs of a diverse student population with various learning styles and abilities.

 

Do I have to create accessible documents, websites, and online courses?

Yes. All electronic media, including word processing documents, PDF’s, presentations, publications, spreadsheets, and videos created or distributed should be accessible.

 

How do I check the accessibility of HTML Websites?

You can check the accessibility of websites by using the WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool.

 

Are there special concerns about accessibility when incorporating emerging technologies into courses?

Yes. Verification of accessibility features should occur prior to choosing and/or purchasing technologies to use in online, blended or face-to-face classes. Consultation with Information Technology & Innovation and/or AccessAbility Services can help ensure that all your students will benefit from these new tools in an “equally effective and equally integrated manner” and keep the University compliant with federal regulations.
