My Second Test Post It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like). Read More

Faculty Spotlight Photo courtesy of Erin Walrath Photo courtesy of Sarah Stewart Riley Brewster Doing What Comes Naturally: Seven Painters in Their Prime February 2 - August 4, 2019 Curated by Robert Storr Riley Brewster Denzil Hurley John Obuck Nathlie Provosty Rebecca Purdum Joyce Robins Andrew Spence An Excerpt From the Curator, Robert Storr's Essay about Riley's work: "...Brewster's incessant drawing with a brush charged with dry, pasty oil pigments, and his comparably unceasing revisions of exploratory marks, are realized in strokes that are virtually if not totally indistinguishable from those they cover and in the process correct or reconfigure. Think Giacometti without wiry delineation or any recognizable bodies or furniture or architectural framework whatsoever. Furthermore, Brewster's paintings are devoid of the overtly melodramatic signs of anguish so many post-existentialist painters affect to the detriment of their compelling pictorial monomanias, though it is hard not to feel a deeply unsettled and hard-to-please nature beneath the second-nature of the language Brewster has chosen. Rather they evoke the implacable density of New England granite and fog. From that vantage point, the muted values of the lichen green, pewter, and slate gray hues that make up his palette would appear to bespeak a depressive temperament, or,… Read More

Student Exhibition at Ridgefield Library WCSU Painting IV Student Exhibition Thresholds  Ridgefield Library December 2, 2018 - January 16, 2019 Artists' Reception: Thurs, Dec 6, 6–8pm Participating artists from the WCSU, Department of Art, Painting IV class: Dana Aftyka, Octavia Byrd, David Flook, Phoebe Hart, Morgan Ho, Alex Mondaca, Ashley O’Brien, Rachel Rossier, Thoai Tran, Valerie West-Rosenthal, Roni Woods Thresholds artist/exhibition statement: In our paintings we ask questions about materiality, perception, and the unknown. Our work collectively represents a broad cross section of the human experience. By engaging with imagination and indulging in our dreams, we seek to break boundaries and to enable the viewer to escape from their daily routines. Immersing ourselves in these fantastical realities, we question the filters of perception. These worlds we create provide us with the means to reflect upon ourselves. As we look inward, we encounter emotions and experiences that have profoundly affected our lives. Courageously, we can tell stories that truthfully address and illustrate ways we deal with our individual memory and history. By cultivating our perceptions, we can become artists who encourage and uplift one another as we struggle with articulating the human experience. Art provides us with a medium through which we can bridge the spiritual… Read More

Faculty Spotlight Sabrina Marques Assistant Professor of Painting Assistant Professor, Sabrina Marquess has been on a roll! She recently proposed and was awarded two noteworthy artist residencies. The first was for the Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy (scuolagrafica.it) that took place this past June 11- June 25, 2017. Her proposed study was to focus on painting and color which incorporated her interest in the culture and color palette of Venice. While there, she attended the Venice Biennale exhibitions and was able to weave that experience into her work as well. The second residency proposal was for The Studios of Key West in Key West, Florida (tskw.org) to take place next summer from June 16- July 14, 2018. The residency was awarded to her for her proposal of creating at least 100 artworks that are each 4" x 4" in size. This proposal is based on her interest in investigating how making diminutive artworks that add up to a large installed wall sized art work challenges perception of scale. She has made 25 artworks toward this project thus far. Congratulations Professor Marques. Keep up the great work.     Read More

The mural project was inspired by a suggestion offered by WCSU Art Gallery Curator Melissa Ralston-Jones, parent of a child previously enrolled at the center, and coordinated by Child Care Center Director Lauren Halpin. Pictured are the WCSU art students who volunteered their time and talents to paint mural panels of spring, summer, autumn and winter scenes on the four exterior walls of the playhouse, including (left to right): Jesse Navarra, Andrea Rios and Brooke Vitetta.
