About The Art Department

Western offers art programs designed, through studio and lecture courses, to help students gain understanding and expertise in several aspects of the visual arts.

Within the art major students have four options:

  1. Graphic design, high quality, comprehensive program that serves to foster growth in an intuitive, conceptual approach to creative visual communication problem solving. The graphic design curriculum consists of a comprehensive range of courses that revolve around typography, concept based problem solving, and the application of both traditional and high-tech processes and techniques. The focus encompasses the entire process of developing memorable, highly functional visual communications solutions.
  2. Illustration, developing images for publications and communication;
  3. Photography, which involves both fine art and advertising photography; and
  4. Studio art. Within the studio art option there are three potential areas of emphasis: painting, printmaking, or sculpture and ceramics. This option is designed for the student interested in fine arts.

All four options have a common foundation program, with specialization diverging in the junior year. The Department maintains an extensive slide collection, reproductions, a Graphic Art Collection, and a Visual Art Collection. There are regular exhibitions of professional and student work in the Art Department Gallery. Art Department members have close ties to the New York art world and are active professionals.

Museum and gallery studies are integral parts of the student's learning process. Students are expected to visit museums and galleries at least once a semester. In order to facilitate this requirement, the Art Department arranges semiannual bus trips to New York City museums and galleries.

The Course Catalog is available online.
