JACOB BETHIN, SURF 2019 Mentor: Dr. Neeta Connally
For my research with Dr. Connally, I investigated whether the Asian longhorned tick — Haemaphysalis longicornis — a tick recently introduced into the United States, parasitized migratory songbirds. This research was aimed to further understand Asian longhorned tick ecology in the U.S. because it was discovered here in 2017 and there are still many unknowns. This tick is also known to be a vector of various harmful diseases that pose a public health risk in other countries it inhabits, although it has recently been shown that it can’t transmit Lyme disease in the U.S. I chose this research because I have always had a passion for insects and arachnids, and ticks are one of the most fascinating arthropods to study. From this research, I was able to learn new skills and ideas that will help me during future research opportunities and help me become a better biologist. I thank Dr. Connally for believing in me to do this research and always pushing me to do my best. Her support and guidance as a mentor helped me become more disciplined and more confident in my work. I am also thankful for Dr. Krell for helping me rediscover my passion for insects and always giving me a push in the right direction. I also thank all the Bio department for their support in helping me realize and achieve my goals during my undergraduate career.
