Biographical Information

Dr. Annmarie B. Spatola is the Program Coordinator and a faculty member for Western Connecticut State University’s Master of Science in Education - Literacy and Language Arts K-12 Program. Dr. Spatola has been an educator for over 30 years working in the area of literacy curriculum and instruction. Certified as a teacher and administrator at the building and district levels in Connecticut and New York State, her experience includes both private and public school instruction ranging from director/teacher of preschool pre-reading instruction through elementary, middle, high school, and the college level. Having worked as both a remedial and developmental reading teacher, her career has included classroom teacher, English and Language Arts Department Chair, Professional Development Consultant, as well as undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level college instructor. She has also been the Director of a Testing, Reading, and Study Skills Summer Program at one of the United States’ leading Ivy League Prep Schools where she worked with international students. Earning her doctoral degree from Western Connecticut State University in 2008, Dr. Spatola has done extensive research on perceived self-efficacy and the development of self-regulated learning strategies to enhance teachers’ effectiveness and students’ success. Her message to her students at all academic levels has remained constant: one should set goals and always strive for self-improvement. Practicing what she preaches has made her a lifelong learner with a desire to nurture, inspire, and positively influence others. This goal is succinctly stated in her personal mission statement: “Inform, Support, Enrich, and Inspire.”
