Mission

The WCSU Department of Mathematics supports the University’s mission as an accessible, responsive, and creative intellectual resource for the people and institutions of Connecticut. We strive to meet the mathematical needs of a diversified student body through instruction, scholarship, and public service. The Department aspires to provide students with the background in mathematics and mathematics education necessary to be successful in their chosen careers and to be productive members of society.

Mathematics is a core component of education for the 21st century, forming a basis of modern technological society. As such, it must be at the forefront of topics stressed by a public university. Mathematics is a tool for developing a technologically literate citizenry.

Both an art and a science, mathematics remains at the heart of a liberal arts education. Learning mathematics enables a person to think logically, solve problems, and delve beneath the surface of many varied and seemingly unrelated subjects.

To accomplish this mission, the department:

  • Prepares students in mathematics through its major offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Prepares students with strong skills in mathematical communication, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and connections to related areas.
  • Enhances the lifetime preparation of students so they are mathematically and technologically literate members of society.
  • Provides needed resources for continuing education and retraining in mathematics for regional citizens currently employed and those who are switching fields.
  • Shares its expertise in mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics with many departments within the university as well as a wide variety of businesses and schools outside the university.
  • Conducts basic and applied research in the fields of mathematics and mathematics education.
  • Provides developmental mathematics courses for students entering the university who are not adequately
  • Provides a personalized learning environment for students of mathematics.
