Chamber Ensembles

WCSU Music students actively participate in ensembles of various sizes and structures. Students in all Music degree programs are required to perform in at least one Chamber Ensemble each semester.

The percussion program at WCSU includes the Percussion Ensemble, the Steel Band, and the advanced Chamber Percussion group.  Selections of music for these groups range from the masterworks of John Cage and Steve Reich to traditional world music genres and popular/jazz arrangements.  Membership is open by audition to students of all degree programs.

Playing and performing in Brass Quintets is an integral part of the education of brass players at WCSU. Brass quintets are frequently the first style of chamber music students experience. In groups of like instruments (two trumpets, horn, trombone and either bass trombone or tuba), students perform pieces from standard brass quintet literature and learn to breathe together, attack together, create ensemble balance, and make music in a small setting. Placement is through audition, and quintets are formed based on similar abilities. Other chamber brass groups include the Brass Ensemble and the Trumpet Ensemble.

The woodwind ensembles at WCSU include the Woodwind QuintetsClarinet QuartetsSaxophone Quartets, the Saxophone Ensemble, and the Flute Choir.

String Quartets provide students with the opportunity to prepare and perform repertoire from this rich musical tradition.

Jazz chamber groups include the Jazz Combos, and the Jazz Guitar Ensembles.
