Foundation Scholarships Available through Institutional Advancement

The 2019 – 2020 scholarship application deadline has passed!  The deadline to apply was March 1, 2019.

To be considered for a Foundation scholarship, including merit and talent based awards, students must complete the Scholarship Application online.  Applicants must either be enrolled or have applied through the Admissions Office to attend Western CT State University to be considered.  For scholarships that have a demonstrated financial need component, applicants must either complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  or submit a documented family financial explanation with your scholarship application.  The recommended filing date for the FAFSA is February 22 which will also satisfy the financial aid priority deadline date.

Gino Arconti JLA Scholarship
Justice & Law Administration

Description: This scholarship was established in 1999 in memory of former Danbury Mayor Gino Arconti in honor of his love and respect for constitutional law. Preference is given to undergraduate juniors majoring in justice and law administration and who have an interest in constitutional law.

John F. Azzariti Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Accounting

This scholarship was created with donations from friends and family upon John’s death in 2008. In 2010, his wife, Kathleen, made it into an endowment. Scholarship will be granted to undergraduate students who are full-time accounting majors in good standing who have completed their 3rd or 4th year and have an overall grade point average of no less than a B- or a 2.67 GPA. Preference will be given to students pursuing their fifth year of 30 extra credits or master’s degree.

Anthony & Julia Caraluzzi Family Scholarship for ASB
Ancell School of Business

Description: The scholarship was established by the Caraluzzi family for undergraduate students enrolled in the Ancell School of Business. Students must have completed 30 credits, with a 3.5+ GPA and financial need. Students can be full or part time.

Dante Cirilli/Grolier Direct Marketing Scholarship
Marketing

Description: Funded by gifts from Grolier Inc. and Dante Cirilli on the occasion of Cirilli’s retirement as president of Grolier Direct Marketing, this scholarship is granted to a full-time  junior or senior student enrolled in the undergraduate direct marketing program.

Fiorita, Kornhaas & Van Houten Accounting Scholarship
Accounting

This scholarship was created by Fiorita, Kornhaas & Company, P.C. The recipient must have completed his/her undergraduate junior year as a full time accounting major and have the highest GPA of all eligible candidates, with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

John Fitzsimmons Accounting Scholarship

Description: The John Fitzsimmons Scholarship is presented to an undergraduate junior or senior accounting major who displays outstanding potential in the field of accounting and business and has demonstrated excellent academic performance. This scholarship is given in memory of Professor Emeritus John Fitzsimmons.

Kenneth Keller Memorial Scholarship
Management

This scholarship benefits undergraduate business majors with preference given to those in small business management and entrepreneurship, a 3.3 GPA, and a minimum of 75 credits.

TJ Lobraico Memorial Scholarship
JLA Major

Description: This scholarship was created with a donation from Linda Rohatsch and others in memory of her son TJ Lobraico who was killed in action while serving active duty in Afghanistan with the United States Air Force.  At the time of his service, TJ was a junior JLA major.  This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate junior (60 credits or more with 30 credits completed at WCSU) JLA major with a minimum GPA of 2.5 registered for a minimum of 9 credits.  The recipient must also show participation in community service.

Morton Family Scholarship for Academic Excellence
Ancell School of Business

Description: This scholarship is endowed by Allen and Roberta Morton to recognize and reward outstanding academic performance among undergraduate students in the Ancell School of Business. Scholarships will be awarded annually to both outstanding full-time and part-time students in their sophomore or junior year. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher and be recommended by their academic departments. Students are strongly encouraged to submit an essay with their application that discusses their academic goals and their plans for the future.

Melissa Fenwick & Harold Schramm Endowed Scholarship
JLA Majors in the Paralegal Studies Program

Description: This scholarship was established in 2008 by Professor Emeritus of Justice and Law Administration and of English Dr. Harold Schramm.  Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and be recommended by their academic department.  Preference will be given to undergraduate JLA juniors in the paralegal studies program who demonstrate need.

Charles E. Wrinn Memorial Scholarship
Small Business Management

Description: The Housatonic Industrial Development Corporation (HIDC) created this scholarship in memory of Chuck Wrinn, longtime president of HIDC and avid supporter of WCSU and the Ancell School of Business. The scholarship will be given to an undergraduate student in the Small Business Management Program who has a minimum GPA of 2.5. He/she must be a Connecticut resident and demonstrate financial need.

Union Savings Bank – Thomas & Monica Frizzell Endowed Scholarship
Accounting Major

Description: This scholarship was established in 2011 on the occasion of Thomas Frizzell’s retirement as Chairman of their Board at Union Savings Bank. The award may be granted to a full-time or part time undergraduate senior majoring in accounting and have one of the highest GPAs in accounting at the end of his/her junior year.

Plonia & Richard Nixon Graduate Scholarship in Art
Art

Description: This fund underwrites scholarships in the MFA program. These scholarship funds can be merit- based or based upon financial need. In all cases, however, awards should be made to students considered as emerging and/or budding artists and should be open to all who qualify in the MFA program.

W.B. Connor Trust Scholarship
Art

Description: This scholarship was established in 2006 with a bequest from the William B. Connor Trust FBO Jane (Sippi) Henderson, who studied art at WCSU. The fund provides scholarships to promising art majors to encourage study abroad, at WCSU or at other supporting arts facilities for a period not to exceed two years.

Dr. Victor Ruderman Memorial Scholarship
Counselor Education

Description: This scholarship was established by Dr. Lilyan Ruderman in memory of her husband. This fund provides support for full or part time students in the counselor education program.  The recipient must have a minimum 2.8 GPA and have completed a minimum of 12 credits in the program.

Baker Communications Group Scholarship in Journalism

Description: This scholarship was established in October 2009 by WCSU graduate William Baker ’86. Recipients must be a full-time undergraduate journalism major in good standing and have a minimum grade point average of a 3.2.

Darryl Ohrt Memorial Scholarship
Communication Studies, Media Production, Media Studies, Professional Writing

Description: This scholarship was established in 2018 by WestConn alumni, William Baker ’86  in memory of Darryl Ohrt ‘85, a Communications & Theatre Arts major who made a profound impact on WCSU campus life and specifically the radio station, WXCI. The recipient must be an undergraduate Communication, Media Arts, or Professional Writing major in good academic standing with junior status (60 credits or more with 30 credits completed at WCSU) and have a minimum GPA of 3.2.

Description: This scholarship, established in 1999, is awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences.  The recipient must demonstrate financial need.

Boehringer Ingelheim Biochemistry Scholarship
Biochemistry

Description: This scholarship was created in 1985 by the Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation. It is to be given to undergraduate students with exemplary academic performance in Biochemistry I Lecture, Biochemistry II Lecture and/or Biochemistry Laboratory.

Carey Foundation Fund Scholarship
Chemistry

Description: This scholarship was established in 1999 by Raymond Carey, of Danbury-based Carey Industries, to assist undergraduate chemistry students of outstanding academic merit.

Communication Department Emeritus Faculty Scholarship
Department: Communication

Description: This scholarship is named in honor of Communication department faculty members whose service to the university has warranted granting them emeritus status. This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time undergraduate communication major who has earned 45 undergraduate credits by the beginning of the spring semester.

Ruth M. Dawson Scholarship
Writing, Linguistics and Creative Process

Description: This scholarship was created in 2006 by Professor Dennis Dawson in memory of his mother, Ruth M. Dawson. Students must be undergraduate full-time students and have a 3.5 GPA from the Macricostas School of Arts and Sciences. The recipient must also be entering their junior or senior year and have exceptional talent in creative science writing or science journalism.

John V. Friel History Scholarship
History/Social Sciences

Description: The John V. Friel Scholarship is given annually, and alternately, by the history and social sciences departments. It is presented to an undergraduate nontraditional history or social sciences major that best exemplifies the two qualities which marked John V. Friel’s life — a zest for learning and commitment to helping others.

Bruce I. Goldsen Radio Broadcasting Scholarship
Communication

Description: Established by Bruce and Sue Goldsen, WCSU alumni, for a scholarship to an upperclassman who has worked at radio station WXCI, has an interest in pursuing a career in radio.

Dr. Mel Goldstein Scholarship
Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology

Description: This endowment was created to provide scholarships to undergraduate sophomores, juniors or seniors who are majoring in meteorology. Scholarships will be awarded to students who are in the top 10 percent of the class, preferably in the theoretical meteorology track. Applicants must be involved in meteorology department activities, as well actively participating in the Weather Center and/or Meteorology Club.

Veronica Hagman Memorial Scholarship
Department: Psychology

Description: Established by her parents in 2005, this scholarship is in memory of Veronica Hagman, a psychology major, who died during her senior year. Recipients must be a female undergraduate student, have a minimum 3.5 GPA and at least 70 credits, of which 40 are at WCSU.

Robert P. Kelleher Scholarship
Writing, Linguistics and Creative Process

Description: This scholarship was established with funds received in memory of Robert P. Kelleher, an English and professional writing student at WCSU. It is awarded to an undergraduate junior or senior student in the professional writing program who is in good academic standing.

Jonathan Mottley Memorial Scholarship
Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology

Description: This scholarship is awarded to the student who has completed the second year of the WCSU meteorology undergraduate program with the highest GPA. It was established in 1998 in memory of WCSU student Jonathan Mottley.

The News-Times/Stephen A. Collins Memorial Scholarship
Writing, Linguistics and Creative Process

Description: The scholarship was established for undergraduate communication students interested in journalism and writing, with 45 credits and who reside a town served by The News Times. It was created by The News-Times in memory of Stephen A. Collins, a News-Times employee for more than 50 years.

Robert and Susan Payne Scholarship
Mathematics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Chemistry, Biology, Nursing, or Secondary Education with a concentration in STEM majors

Description: This scholarship was established by Robert and Susan Payne to support a full time, undergraduate matriculated student who has completed 24 – 45 credits at WCSU. The applicants must be eligible for instate tuition and fees with a minimum GPA of 2.75 and demonstrate financial need.  This scholarship will be for six consecutive semester for $6,000 per student per year.

Professor Edwin Rosenberg Scholarship
Mathematics

Description: The Professor (Emeritus) Edwin Rosenberg Scholarship was established with funds received from his former student, Doris Lundberg, M.D. This scholarship honors Professor Rosenberg’s inspiration to a generation of WCSU students through his excellence and dedication to the teaching of mathematics. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate mathematics major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated financial need.

Arthur & Alberta Rosien Memorial Scholarship
Social Sciences

Description: This scholarship was established in 1999 through a bequest from alumnus Arthur Rosien. Recipients must be full-time undergraduate political science majors with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

John Tamas Memorial Scholarship
Writing, Linguistics and Creative Process

Description: This scholarship was established in 2005 in memory of John Tamas, a WCSU student who passed away in his senior year. It is awarded to an undergraduate junior or senior creative writing or literature major with an enthusiastic attitude toward scholarly pursuits and/or creative writing and a 3.0 GPA.

Tao Endowed Scholarship for Peace
Mathematics (preferred) or Business Administration

Description: This endowment was established in 2015 with a donation from the Tao Family, who believe that peace and harmony will be achieved in today’s world through advanced education and by collaboratively working together. It is awarded to a full time graduate or undergraduate mathematics or business administration major who is participating in a university project that enhances their educational experience at Western.

Truman A. Warner Scholarship

Description: This scholarship, established in 1997 in memory of WCSU Professor Emeritus Truman A. Warner, is awarded to an undergraduate history, American studies or social sciences major with junior standing and a minimum GPA of 3.0. The recipient must demonstrate significant achievement, breadth of intellectual interest, and service to the university and community.

Description: This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor for undergraduate nursing majors.

Professor Albert “Tuck” Alciene Memorial Scholarship
Nursing

Description: Established in 2002, this scholarship is awarded to a registered nurse who is an undergraduate student in the RN-BSN Program at WCSU in memory of Tuck Alciene, who was a professor in the nursing department. He is remembered for his great insight into human behavior, an uplifting sense of humor, strong commitment to classroom and bedside teaching, caring encouragement to nursing students and devotion to the nursing profession.

Scott Andrews Memorial Scholarship
Social Work

Description: The scholarship was established in memory of Scott Andrews, a social work major who died in the spring of 1992 as the result of a fire in a house adjacent to the university. The award is presented to a returning undergraduate student who will be entering his/her junior or senior year in the social work program and demonstrates a commitment to helping others. Preference is given to students from single-parent families. Social work faculty members select the recipient with input from Andrews’ parents.

Martha Bernstein & Patricia Ivry Women’s Social Work Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established with a donation from Evan Bernstein ’98 and his wife Heidi in order to provide financial aid assistance to Western Connecticut State University Social Work students. This scholarship is awarded annually to a female, full or part time undergraduate social work major who is entering her last year of study at Western and who has demonstrated financial need.

Dr. Joseph B. Cherry Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Nursing

Description: This scholarship is presented to Greater Danbury area undergraduate nursing students with a minimum 3.1 GPA. The student must have a conscientious commitment to nursing and have a caring and holistic approach to patients and their care. It was established in 1999 by Mrs. Joseph B. Cherry to honor the memory of her husband, Dr. Joseph B. Cherry.

Tom & Lois Crucitti Nursing Scholarship
Nursing

Description: The scholarship was established in 2001 by Lois, ’71, R.N. nursing, and Tom Crucitti ’69, medical technology. The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate nursing student with a minimum 3.0 GPA in his/her core curriculum who has completed at least 30 credits at WCSU, and exhibit some financial need.

Laura Duffy Memorial Scholarship
Social Work

Description: This scholarship was established in memory of Laura Duffy, a nontraditional social work student who died in 1995 after a long battle with cancer. In conjunction with the department of social work, Duffy’s family established the award to benefit an undergraduate social work major who has demonstrated a longtime commitment to community service and embodies Laura’s warmth and caring. Additional consideration will be given to members of Phi Alpha Social Work honor society.

Mary Edgett Endowed Scholarship
Education

Description: This scholarship was established in 2008 and celebrates the life and career achievements of Mary Edgett ‘24. This scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering junior or senior year and majoring in education. Eligible students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and have completed a minimum of 60 credits. Recipients should intend to pursue a career in teaching.

Paul L. Jones Nursing Scholarship
Department: Nursing

Description: This competitive scholarship, supported by an educational trust established under the will of Douglas P. Jones, supports scholarships for students enrolled in WCSU’s nursing program.

Craig Lundwall Memorial Scholarship
Social Work

Description: The Craig Lundwall Memorial Scholarship was established in 2001, shortly after the untimely death of Craig Lundwall, Class of 1998. His parents, family and friends chose to memorialize Craig through an academic and need-based scholarship for an undergraduate social work major at WestConn. This is a most fitting tribute, since Craig was a true intellectual, cherishing the opportunity to learn and demanding high academic standards of himself and colleagues. It is also fitting that the scholarship be awarded to a social work major with demonstrated financial need, since Craig cared deeply about those in need, serving as their advocate. Only social work majors are eligible. A social work faculty committee selects the recipient. Preference given to a senior social work student.

Myra Mattes-Ross Endowed Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established in 2010 by WestConn alumna, Myra Mattes-Ross and Dr. Samuel B. Ross, Jr., to benefit full time, undergraduate, education majors with demonstrated financial need.

Pay It Forward Scholarship
Social Work

Description: The scholarship was created with a donation from Patricia & Robert Ivry in order to provide financial aid assistance to undergraduate full time matriculating juniors in WCSU’s School of Professional Studies majoring in Social Work. The recipient must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA with a minimum cumulative 2.75 GPA in their social work classes at the start of their fall semester of their junior year.  The student must obtain a 3.0 GPA in their social work classes at the end of the fall semester to be eligible for the spring semester’s portion of their scholarship.  If the student maintains the 3.0 GPA in their social work classes at the end of their junior year spring semester, then they will be eligible to receive the scholarship in their Fall semester of their senior year.

Robert and Susan Payne Scholarship
Mathematics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Chemistry, Biology, Nursing, or Secondary Education with a concentration in STEM majors

Description: The Robert Schappert Scholarship was established in 2006 and is awarded to an undergraduate senior education major. Special consideration for this need-based scholarship will be given to full-time students with a strong GPA.

Gail P. Shaker Memorial Scholarship
Elementary Education

Description: This scholarship was established by Lea Neylan in memory of her daughter, Gail. It is to be used for a scholarship for an undergraduate junior or senior, elementary education majors who demonstrate financial need and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Social Work Community Advisory/Alumni Scholarship
Social Work

Description: This scholarship was created with donations from friends and alumni of the Social Work Department and the Social Work Community Advisory Committee in order to provide financial aid assistance to students majoring in social work at Western Connecticut State University. This scholarship is awarded  to an undergraduate nontraditional, social work major. Eligible students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate a commitment to community involvement and potentially be an active alumni of the Social Work program.

Colleen Stewart Memorial Scholarship
Education

Description: This scholarship was established in 2006 by Dr. Albert Stewart in memory of his wife, Colleen. It is to be used for scholarships to undergraduate education majors who need assistance when unexpected setbacks arise that might prevent them from continuing their education at WCSU.

Susan B. and Henry G. Tritter Scholarship
Theatre Arts (awarded in even years) and Nursing (awarded in odd years)

Description: This scholarship was established by Susan B. and Henry G. Tritter to assist undergraduate students majoring in nursing and theatre arts. As of the beginning of the spring semester students will have earned a minimum of 60 undergraduate credits toward a degree at Western. A minimum 3.5 GPA is required.. The academic department will identify a student who shows promise of professional success in his/her field of study.

Union Savings Bank – Thomas R. Nolan Scholarship
Education

Description: This scholarship was established in 2000 on the occasion of Thomas R. Nolan’s retirement as chairman of the Board of Trustees at Union Savings Bank. The award may be granted to a full-time undergraduate junior or senior majoring in secondary education with a concentration in writing. Applicants should intend to pursue a career in teaching upon graduation. The scholarship will be presented at least every other year, with the award amount to be determined annually. A committee of education faculty and the chair of the English Department will recommend a recipient.

Union Savings Bank — Sturdevant Family Scholarship
Education

Description: This scholarship was established in 2004 by Union Savings Bank to honor the Sturdevant family. Scholarships are to be awarded to undergraduate students entering the junior or senior year who are pursuing a career in teaching mathematics, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and exhibit financial need.

Howard Hobbs Memorial Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established in 1990 to honor the memory of anthropology Professor Howard Hobbs of the social sciences department. It is awarded in even years to an undergraduate student in music, art, or theatre on the basis of his/her academic achievement, with preference given to a student admitted under the Honors Program.

Kannengeiser Scholarship Endowment
Music

Description: This scholarship was established in 2005 by an anonymous donor in memory of Joel Kannengeiser to support music scholarships. This scholarship benefits a student who is majoring in music or music education with a record of academic achievement and who possesses extraordinary singing or musical talent. The recipient must be a Connecticut resident with a strong GPA, and exhibit financial need.

Peggy Will Koschel Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Theatre Arts

Description: This scholarship was established by the family of Margaret (Peggy) Will Koschel in 2008 to assist full-time undergraduate students majoring in theatre arts or medical technology. Peggy, an alumna from the class of 1951, is being remembered for actively being involved with her alma mater and the Danbury Community. Recipients must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and have completed a minimum of 60 undergraduate credits at WCSU. Students must also have financial need.

James Somers Opera Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was created by Judith Somers in memory of her husband, James Somers. It is awarded to a talented undergraduate opera student as recommended by the music department.

Susan B. and Henry G. Tritter Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established by Susan B. and Henry G. Tritter to assist undergraduate students majoring in nursing and theatre arts. Description: The scholarship was established in 2000 by Roy and Ginny Young to provide support for theatre arts majors. A nominee is recommended by the theatre arts department and must demonstrate financial need.  The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least 15 credits toward a theatre arts major and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Austin P. Tautkus Memorial Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: Established in 2015 by Austin’s family and many friends to keep his spirit alive, this scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student who exemplifies strong leadership abilities through participation in activities associated with Western Connecticut State University.

Isabelle T. Farrington Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: Established in 2000 by WCSU alumna Isabelle Farrington, this scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student of good character with a class ranking in the top 10 percent who will be entering their junior or senior year at WCSU and have earned 45 credits or more at Western.

Claire G. Trisch & Alfred T. Geddes Memorial Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: This scholarship was established in 2009 in memory of deans Claire and Alfred Geddes. Recipients must be an undergraduate with financial need.

Ruth A. Haas Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: The scholarship was established to honor Ruth A. Haas, president of WCSU from 1946 to 1975. Student should show leadership within the university and community and be an undergraduate with a strong GPA.

Macricostas Family Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: This scholarship was established in 2002 by Deno and Marie Macricostas through the Macricostas Family Foundation. Students must be an undergraduate with financial need and will have lived in the U.S. no longer than seven years.

Arlyne M. O’Boy Scholarship Fund
Open to all majors

Description: This fund was established in 1989 by the estate of Arlyne M. O’Boy. In accordance with her last will and testament, “Said income is to be used by it for the education of a needy and deserving student or students who shall be chosen by the president of Western Connecticut State University, or by the faculty of said college under his or her direction. Particular but not exclusive consideration will be given to students of the Danbury-Bethel area.” Must be an undergraduate student.

Peter M. Stewart Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: This scholarship was established in memory of Peter M. Stewart by his parents, Peggy ’07 & Craig Stewart, in May 2010 with gifts received from family and friends upon Peter’s death in January 2010.  Scholarships will be granted to undergraduate students who have a minimum of 24 credits and a 2.5 GPA with full-time enrollment status.  Preference will be given to students enrolled in programs that will lead to careers in health or social services including, but not limited to, social work, psychology, child abuse or addiction services.  Scholarships will be available beginning with the 2012/2013 school year.

The SGA Endowed Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: This scholarship was established as a way to “give back” to current and future students that embrace the mission statement of the SGA by promoting student involvement in campus and community activities.  Applicants shall be full time matriculated students who have completed a minimum of 12 credits at WCSU while maintaining a GPA of 2.0 or better.  To be considered as a finalist: qualified students must submit an application and a short essay describing their current involvement in campus and/or community service and why did they choose to become involved.

The Richard H. Sullivan Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: This scholarship was established by Richard H. Sullivan, a retired WCSU vice president of finance and administration, in honor and memory of the extraordinary friends and co-workers he interacted with during his more than 30-year tenure at WestConn. It reflects his desire to recognize members of the classified service. Dependents of full-time WCSU employees in the classified service who are matriculated in good academic standing and can show financial need are eligible to apply.

Hawley Family Endowed Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established by the Hawley family in 2002 for graduating seniors from three local high schools: Danbury, Henry Abbott Tech and Immaculate, who will attend Western Connecticut State University as an undergraduate in the coming fall semester. Scholarships will be awarded to students with a minimum 3.0 high school GPA who are committed to becoming a full-time student with an academic major in the Ancell School of Business. Students must demonstrate financial need.

Description: This scholarship was established by the Rizzo family in 2003 for graduating seniors from two local high schools: Danbury High and Immaculate who will attend Western Connecticut State University as undergraduates in the coming fall semester. Scholarships will be awarded to students with a minimum 2.8 high school GPA who are committed to becoming a full-time student with an academic major in the Ancell School of Business and who can demonstrate financial need. Scholarships will rotate between Danbury High School and Immaculate High School graduates each year.

Irfan Kathwari Foundation Scholarship
Education

Description: This scholarship was established by M. Farooq Kathwari in honor of his son, Irfan Kathwari, to support minority undergraduate students in the teacher education program. Kathwari, the president, chairman and CEO of Ethan Allen Inc., created the award to recruit promising students to WCSU’s teacher education program. Preference is given to Danbury inner-city minority high school seniors who want to pursue careers teaching K-12 in the Danbury public schools.

The Phyllis Jean Callahan Minck Memorial Scholarship
Education

Description: This scholarship was created in March 2010 in memory of Phyllis Jean Callahan Minck through a bequest from the Estate of Marguerite M. Minck, a Danburian who was a local math and Latin high school teacher who later taught at WestConn. The scholarship will be awarded for four (4) consecutive years to a female graduate of Danbury High School who has been accepted and will attend WCSU to major in secondary education.

Description: This endowment was created to remember and honor Ana Marquez-Greene, daughter of WCSU Professor Jimmy Greene and Nelba Marquez-Greene. Funds from this donation will support scholarships to incoming Department of Music undergraduate students to be chosen by the dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Description: These funds are made available from the generous donations of Mary and Rudy Behrens. Funds from this donation will support scholarships, costs associated with student performances, and other projects identified by the chair of the Department of Music. Students are selected by audition.

Rose Londa Heyman Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established by a bequest from Rose L. Heyman, a 1927 graduate who received her master’s degree from WCSU in 1963. Recipients must be full-time majors from Fairfield or Litchfield County. Preference is given to Danbury residents. Awarded by audition with consideration given to financial need and strong academic standing..

Open to all incoming students who reside in Bethel, CT at time of high school graduation

Description: This scholarship was established in 2012 through a gift to create the Clarisse & Henry Arnhold Scholarship to cover the four year cost of tuition and fees for two students who reside in the town of Bethel at the time of their high school graduation.  One incoming applicant must have achieved excellent academic standing throughout their high school career and a second applicant must demonstrate character and enterprise as recommended by the Bethel Superintendent of schools and/or WCSU Admissions Department.

Anthony & Julia Caraluzzi Family Scholarship for Bethel and Immaculate high schools

Description: This scholarship was established by the Caraluzzi Family for students entering WCSU from Bethel or Immaculate high schools. Students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA, exhibit some financial need and contact their high school counselor for application.

Union Savings Bank Endowed Scholarship
Open to all majors

Description: These scholarships were created by Union Savings Bank in 2002 during WCSU’s Centennial Campaign. Students must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. Students must live in western Connecticut, defined as from Waterbury to the New York border and from the Massachusetts border to Long Island Sound.

Description: The WCSU Alumni Association awards this scholarship to students whose careers at WCSU reflect excellence in both academics and co-curricular activities. American Association of University Women Scholarship
AAUW Committee

Description: The Danbury area branch of the American Association of University Women offers the scholarship to a student who has successfully completed three years of college and is completing a bachelor’s degree at Western. An AAUW committee selects the recipient. A separate application is required and can be picked up from the University Events office. The Danbury Garden Club Scholarship
Biological & Environmental Sciences

Description: This scholarship is awarded by the Danbury Garden Club to a full-time student studying plant biology, ecology, conservation or a related field. The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have financial need. Application forms and additional requirement information can be obtained from the WCSU Office of Institutional Advancement or the Danbury Garden Club.

Alma Exley Scholarship

This scholarship program is intended to support and encourage persons of color in Connecticut who are committed to a career in public school teaching.  A scholarship award of at least $3,000 will be granted to an individual who has been admitted to a teacher-preparation program in a Connecticut college or university.  The application should be mailed to the Alma Exley Scholarship Program, Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, 74A Vine Street, New Britain, CT   06052.  Entries must be postmarked by October 31.  Students in a traditional teacher-preparation program should obtain an application form in September from the dean or director of the teacher-preparation program in which they are enrolled. Jewelry Designs Scholarship

Description: Jewelry Designs of Danbury, CT has established a scholarship to be awarded to a Connecticut resident student who has completed a minimum of 15 credits with a 3.0 minimum grade point average and is attending a four year college or university. Description: The scholarship was established to honor May Sherwood, a WCSU alumna and former head of the education department, for her unselfish dedication to her profession and to her students. The Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.)
Adult Learners

Description: This grant is available to provide financial assistance to “women whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to resume studies due to changing demands in their lives”.  Applicants are eligible to apply if they are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada, is studying in the U.S. or Canada, has had at least 24 consecutive months as a non-student sometime in their adult life, is within 24 consecutive months of completing their educational goal, and is not enrolled in a doctoral degree program.
