Help Restore the Gardens & Riverbank at Oyster Shell Park in Norwalk

Help us remove invasives and plant native wildflowers and trees to restore the park’s gardens and the riverbank to prevent erosion and protect the river. Meet at the playground on North Water Street between the Aquarium and the new mall in Norwalk. Bring water, gloves, clippers, and a spade or shovel if possible.  Limited tools are available.
Butterfly Walk!

Victor DeMasi, lepidopterist, research affiliate for Yale’s Peabody Museum and NRWA Advisory Board member, has been studying butterflies and moths in an area along the Norwalk River since 1977. He will introduce area butterflies and moths, discuss their food and habitats and show his remarkable collection. Meet at the corner of Simpaug Turnpike and Route 7, on the Ridgefield/Redding line. Compostology: The Science and Simplicity of Home Composting

As part of its Gardening Lecture Series, the library presents Compostology by Cathy Smith, a Master Composter in training through the UConn Home & Garden Education Center. A long-time gardener, she is working on her New York Botanical Gardens certificate and has studied gardening with Fergus Garrett, Head Gardener at Great Dixter in East Sussex, England. When not composting or gardening, she teaches yoga and serves on the boards of the Norwalk River Watershed Association, Norwalk River Valley Trail, and Pollinator Pathway. Trash Dash
Saturday, September 15, 7-10AM
NRWA will join Keep America Beautiful and the Maritime Aquarium in sponsoring a “Plogging” event to help clean up the streets of Norwalk.  Plogging is jogging while picking up litter! There will be a loop for runners with two drop off sites for bags of trash collected. NRWA will be stationed at the Aquarium helping to categorize and weigh the trash so it can be part of the data for International Coastal Cleanup day organized by Ocean Conservancy globally and Save the Sound in CT. Sign up here as a volunteer or a plogger.

2018 Connecticut Bird Atlas Volunteer Appreciation Fall Get Together

Connecticut Bird Atlas Volunteer Appreciation Fall Get Together Oct 7, 2018 from 12 to 3 PM at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Pavilion 4.

We will: give updates of the Atlas Project, data, trends and stats; present the winter survey protocol; and present awards and door prizes. Refreshments will be served.  Stay tuned for more announcements.

Climate Change Lecture

A fascinating series of lectures about “Climate Change and Human Civilization” on Wednesday, February 7, at 7 p.m. in WCSU’s Science Building, room 125. All are invited. The first topic is “Climate and Cyclones,” and will be presented by Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences Dr. Mitch Wagener, known for his lively talks.

Frog Watch USA: Training lessons

FrogWatch USATM is a citizen science program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that invites individuals and families to learn about the wetlands in their communities and help conserve amphibians by reporting data on the calls of local frogs and toads. AZA’s FrogWatch USA comprises a national network of skilled coordinators and volunteers that form a community with the common goal of providing large-scale, long-term data on frogs and toads in the United States.
